Journeyman

You are scored only on what your apprentice can do without you.

A wordless apprentice watches your hands. Show them a bowl, a hinge, a joint — clean and consistent, or hurried and sloppy, it makes no difference to the clay. What you demonstrate is what they learn. What they learn is what the guild grades.

How this works

  1. A commission arrives. The guild wants a bowl, a hinge, or a joint, roughly shaped like the reference on the left.
  2. You demonstrate by dragging a stroke on the workbench — or you hold back and demonstrate nothing at all. Restraint teaches too: a bad stroke taught badly is worse than no lesson.
  3. The apprentice attempts the commission alone, using only what you've shown them so far — a real nearest-neighbor learner, not a hidden dice roll.
  4. The guild grades the apprentice's work, not yours. Reputation rises with good grades. At reputation 10, they graduate.
  5. Teach the same shape the same way every time and the apprentice will be reliable but narrow. Teach a wide range, consistently, and they generalize. Teach sloppily and they will faithfully reproduce your sloppiness.

REFERENCE
YOUR HANDS

Drag on the workbench to shape a demonstration. Match the reference, or don't — the apprentice only knows what you show them.

Graduation day

The apprentice threw the guild bowl alone, and the guild called it good.

Whatever they can do now, they learned from watching you do it — patiently or not.
